Created in 1976, Ellisse belongs to the Plurimi series designed by Gabriella Crespi between 1970 and 1982. Defined as a ‘metamorphic sculpture-table’ and featuring two extendable slide out trays, Ellisse was presented in 1976 as part of the homonymous collection, together with Cubo Tondo and Tavolo Scultura in its new oval version, and was constructed mostly out of brass and steel. A rare version in Persian travertino marble was shown in the Last Supper Room of the Museum of Science and Technology in Milan as part of the “I Plurimi di Gabriella Crespi” exhibition, presented by Vanni Scheiwiller for Salone del Mobile 1982. Production was interrupted in 1987 when Crespi decided to embark on a spiritual journey that led her to relocate to India, where she lived for nearly two decades. After her return, she turned her attention to some of her unfinished projects and with her daughter Elisabetta selected the models and the materials she would entrust to her artisans to continue production. In 2012 her new company Gabriella Crespi Srl was founded and 2013 officially marked the start of the new production. New versions of Ellisse were presented starting from 2015 Milan Design Week by Rita Fancsaly gallery as part of the “Gabriella Crespi New Bronze Age” collection, as well as special editions constructed out of travertine marble. Still today, like all of Crespi’s works currently in production, Ellisse is built on commission and is included among Gabriella Crespi’s special projects.
The first Ellisse coffee table was created in 1976 and exhibited 40 years later at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan as part of the “W.Women’s in Italian Design” exhibition – 2 April 2016 / 19 February 2017.
